Wrought
iron coat racks are made through a process called forging. In
this process, pipes and other solids are heated and hammered into
shapes and welded or bolted together. Iron rust relatively easily,
so it is important that your wrought iron coat racks have been
coated with a rust-resistant finish or a special coating that
will protect against corrosion and chipping.
If you find any rust or scratches as soon as you see them by
sanding lightly over the spot with fine steel wool. Afterwards,
you can apply several thin coats of metal paint (following the
instructions both of the paint and of your wrought iron coat rack)
– make sure to let each coat dry before you apply the next
coat of metal paint.
Of course, even with iron’s slight susceptibility to rust,
you can expect that your wrought iron coat racks will last for
upwards of a century. They are pieces that you can pass on down
through generations.
Also, if you have a standing wrought iron coat rack, you can
expect it to stay standing – iron is both heavy and solid.
It takes a lot more than a few heavy, wet coats to tip it over.
When shopping for your wrought iron coat racks, look for pieces
that have been welded together, not bolted. Also look for pieces
that have been made not with hollow tubing, but solid metal.
